The Bay St. Louis Fire Department began as the Independent Hope, Hook and Ladder Company, a volunteer department formed in the late 1800’s.
It was front page news in The Sea Coast Echo on July 8, 1899, when “Mr. Charles A Breath, a public spirited and liberal citizen, donated one dozen metallic water buckets to the Independent Hope, Hook, and Ladder Fire Co., No. 1.”
The department became a full-time, paid department in 1962 with one engine and driver. Today the Bay St. Louis Fire Department operates out of two fire stations and is responsible for the protection of 8,500 residents living within the City of 16 square miles.
The department is a professional fire and rescue service of 21 firefighters, four pumpers, one tender and two rescue units, and responds to approximately 1,300 incidents annually. The department maintains a workforce of people who are dedicated to preventing or minimizing threats to lives and property.
